What I'm paid for

The elusive Mr M.

I write computer programs for food. Most of my recent fun has come from doing back-end Internet programming, the interfaces between databases and the web, such as for eCommerce.

I also like working with Geographical Information Systems and small penguins.

What I do anyway

Rogaining

It's similar to orienteering, but it lasts for 24 hours. If you fancy jogging through the bush, getting prickled and bitten by strange animals then this may be the sport for you. Check out the WA Rogaining Association pages for more details on what it is and how to get involved. Although it's most popular in Australia, there are a few clubs elsewhere in the world. If you're already a participant feel free to email me with hints, especially about night-time navigation ;~)

Circus skills

Radioactive Man ballet dancing?Inspired at an early age by Piccadilly Circus, I concentrated on mastering various useful abilities.

Here's some documentary evidence that I can juggle - an avi movie (152kB) compressed with Indeo 5. Some good hints to get you started may be found at the Juggling Information Service and (for riding those funny one-wheeled contraptions) at The Unicycle Page.

My current goals are to juggle 5 balls at once, and to be able to remain stationary on the unicycle. (Information for non-unicyclists: moving forward is easy, backwards is harder, and staying still is hardest.)

As I have no human-sized cannon, I'm afraid my plans to shoot myself over my single-storey house have been postponed indefinitely.

Stare at cars

The Swatch CarOn the right is a picture that I took a few years ago in Rome of the Smart (originated by Swatch and Daimler-Benz). It's good to see cars that are applauded for their small size, their looks and their fuel economy, rather than how much power their engine can produce.

The Toyota Prius, a hybrid petrol/electric car, is a more normal looking vehicle with some revolutionary fuel-saving features. It's also actually available for sale where I am, which is another element in its favour. A nicer looking, though more expensive, hybrid car is the The Honda Insight, which can go over 1100 km on one tank.
